On Wednesday 21st May, the charity Reminiscence Learning brought their fundraising efforts to Shepton Mallet Prison, a 400-year-old historic site nestled in the heart of Somerset.

Famous Faces Join the ‘Jailbreak’

TV personality, Richard McCourt (of Dick and Dom) and former BBC journalist Clinton Rogers, both ambassadors for Reminiscence Learning, took part in a special ‘Jailbreak’ event held during Dementia Action Week.

Supporting People Living With Dementia

The Jailbreak event aimed to raise essential funds in support of individuals living with dementia and their caregivers as well as The Archie Project, an intergenerational initiative connecting schools with care homes to teach children about dementia and reduce stigma.

Doing The Time Without Committing A Crime

Participants began their day by saying goodbye to their freedom as they entered the prison grounds and stepped into what we like to call the ‘prisoner experience’. After ‘confessing’ their crimes, they were issued bright orange jumpsuits and were marched to B Wing, where they experienced time in solitary confinement.

From there, they faced physical challenges in the exercise yard, followed by The Cell – an immersive escape room that tested their teamwork and puzzle-solving skills.

To earn their release, participants had to raise ‘bail money’ by calling on friends and family for donations. The result? £13,530 raised and yes, everyone was allowed to leave at the end of the day. For those wondering, the secret password was… ‘bogies!’.
