This exciting role of Events & Activities Assistant is to support the Duty Manager with the growing range of activities & events on offer at Shepton Mallet Prison. From welcoming guests through our gates for our overnight events, to locking people up in our prison themed escape rooms, you’ll be heavily involved in all the various events and activities that Shepton Mallet Prison has to offer.
The role is 21 hours per week, to include weekend and evening working, as well as weekday daytime shifts. Immediate start is available and full training will be given.
The salary for this role is £11,466.00.
This role requires first class delivery, great customer service and the ability to pick up new skills!
Key responsibilities include:
- Having knowledge of all products, tours and activities available at Shepton Mallet Prison
- Supporting large events, such as Night Behind Bars
- Behind the scenes preparation for seasonal activities and events
- Ensuring all activities are carried out in a safe and secure manner
- Ensuring activities are conducted at a high standard
- Working as part of a team and maintaining communication with fellow colleagues during events

Customer Service Assistant – 32 hours Per week
£17,472.00 per annum (£10.50 PH)

Shepton Mallet Prison has an exciting new vacancy for a Customer Sales Assistant! The role of CSA involves being the first point of contact for our customers and visitors.
This role is 32 hours per week and includes weekdays, weekends and occasional evenings. The salary for this role is £17,472.00.
Key responsibilities: 
- Welcoming visitors to the site, checking tickets, taking payments and supporting other staff in getting different tours and activities started on time
- Answering phone calls, dealing with customer enquiries over the phone and via email, taking bookings and payments, responding to social media queries
- Having an in-depth knowledge of our products, being able to relay this information to visitors
- Cash handling and cashing up
- Aiding in the daily Opening and Closing of the Visitor Centre, as well as supporting the whole team with general cleaning tasks around the site, to improve the customers’ experience
- Ensuring the Visitor Centre, Gift Shop and Cafe is stocked, cleaned, and promoted.
- Ensuring the high standard of cleanliness in the Café is maintained.
Personal requirements:

- Confident talking to people in person, via phone and email and answering on the spot questions

Desired Experience:
- Previously worked in Customer facing type of role
- Till experience, including cash handling and reconciliations

- Extensive prior knowledge of the prison and prison life is not required but you should have a desire to learn

Tour Guide – 21 hours Per week

Shepton Mallet Prison has an exciting new vacancy for a Tour Guide to join our existing Heritage & Tours team. This pivotal role is 21 hours per week, which will include weekdays, evenings and weekends. The salary for this position is £12,012.00 per annum.
Key responsibilities: 
In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring fantastic customer service and delivering fact-filled tours of the prison to our visitors, including:
- Guided Tours
- Delivering guided tours on prison life and history, to public groups across a range of ages
- Educational Tours
- Delivering our ground-breaking new National Educational Programme to school groups of varying sizes, age range, and learning needs.
- Ghost Tours
- Delivering tours after dark, on the ghostly history of Shepton Mallet Prison
Personal requirements:
Our ideal candidate must have great communication and customer service skills, be confident, personable, and flexible. Knowledge of the prison & prison life is not required but you should have a desire to learn.
