Recapping 2025’s Highlights at Shepton Mallet Prison

Recapping 2025’s Highlights at Shepton Mallet Prison

As the new year approaches, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what has been an extraordinary year at the World’s Oldest Prison. From celebrating a major anniversary to receiving prestigious awards and delivering unforgettable visitor experiences, 2025 has truly been a year to remember.

A Major Milestone in British Heritage

This year marked the prison’s 400th anniversary, commemorated through a series of Living History Days. First opened in 1625, Shepton Mallet Prison continues to invite visitors to step back in time and explore four centuries of history.

Just as importantly, 2025 also brought exciting news for the prison’s future. At the beginning of the year, Cove Group announced the official purchase of Shepton Mallet Prison. This acquisition ensures that the prison will be preserved, restored and developed for generations to come, so its story, 400 years and counting, can continue to be shared.

Achievements Worth Celebrating

In August, we received the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award for seven years in a row! This incredible recognition places us among the top 10% of things to do worldwide and thanks to consistently great reviews from our visitors.

And the celebrations didn’t stop there. At this year’s Bristol, Bath and Somerset Tourism Awards, we were proud to receive Commended Status in the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year category. We were also thrilled to see Monica Newton, Duty Manager of Heritage and Tours, win the Unsung Hero Award.

Unforgettable Experiences from the Inside

Alongside our core offerings, including Guided Tours, escape rooms and the popular Night Behind Bars, we delivered a full calendar of special experiences throughout the year. From becoming junior detectives during February Half Term to free entry for mums and dads on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, there was something for everyone.

Other highlights included our EGG-CELL-ENT Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Ghost Tours and a series of well-researched Evening Behind Bars talks exploring the prison’s former Victorian inmates, EVP recordings and the chilling history of witchcraft, with more talks to come next year.
